American retailer Costco is shutting down the photo labs in a growing number of its stores, according to letters the company has sent to its customers. ‘ The retailer will continue to offer photo printing through its Photo Center website and at select other locations, however.
In 2015, Costco started cutting back on its in-store photography departments when it announced it would no longer offer film development services. Then, in March 2019, Costco took it a step further and announced it would be closing a number of in-store photo departments due to insufficient demand.
The announcement was made known to Costco Photo Center patrons via email early this morning. In March of 2019, Costco announced that it was closing some of its in-store photo departments, citing plummeting print sales and a lack of demand for the service. Today, that sentiment was echoed in the email to customers.
The closures won’t affect all of Costco’s photo business. A slew of products will remain available on the Costco Photo Center website, including the order and delivery of prints, enlargements, greeting cards, calendars, stationery, photo blankets and other photo-related gifts.
