Myth: Eggshell should be mixed right into your chickens’ feed. Shell should always be fed free-choice so each chicken will eat as much or as little as she needs (and roosters and not-yet-laying pullets) won’t eat any. If you mix the shells into their feed, you’re just going to find that you end up going through way more than is necessary.
You could be thinking “Do you feed your chickens eggshells?”
I actually think that by feeding your chickens eggshells it helps prevent egg eating by providing them extra calcium, so they don’t go looking for it on their own. I feed my chickens dried and crushed eggshells, eggshell halves, raw eggs, cooked eggs, you name it.
What do you feed your chickens?
I feed my chickens dried and crushed eggshells, eggshell halves, raw eggs, cooked eggs, you name it. They love it all and have never once been tempted to go breaking the eggs in their nests.
A common question we ran across in our research was “Do you have to bake eggshells before feeding?”.
You don’t have to bake the eggshells before feeding them to your chickens, but you need to break them up into very tiny pieces. Keep in mind that your chickens may start eating the eggs they lay if they get used to eating big pieces of shell.
You can hard-boil the eggs, peel them, smash them up and feed them to your chickens, or, you can just smash them up with the shells still attached and feed them to your chickens. The calcium from the eggs shells is an extra benefit for your laying hens and it makes it easy if you just smash up the eggs without having to peel them.
Are shells good luck?
Because of their association with the sea, which connects distant places, shells are supposed to enhance travel luck as well as strengthen long-distance relationships. Sea shells also provide relief from stress and offer a protective shield. Shells are also a symbol of good communication, positive and healthy relationships and prosperity.
A conch shell has always been considered bad luck if found in one’s house. Many people kept this shell outside their house in order to keep the sea outside. On the other hand, this shell ensembles courage and good luck to smile upon those that own it. Superstition around the shell goes back many years.
Should I help a chicks hatch?
“You should only try to help a chick hatch if it’s partially zipped the shell, but hasn’t advanced at all in the past 24 hours, assuming the chick is at term. It can take a while for chicks to fully zip, but in my experience, if it started, but has gotten stalled, it might be malpresented.”.
While I was reading we ran into the query “Should I Help my chicks get out of the shell?”.
Often, despite wanting to help, we do have to let nature lead the way, and allow the chick time to get out of the shell on their own. If you assist the chick in hatching you can cause it to have weakened legs, because you have done the hard work of break the shell.
One of the next things we asked ourselves was; how long does it take for chicks to break through shells?
The whole procedure of pipping until hatching can take up to twenty-four hours. So, whatever you do, don’t help the chick break through their shell either through impatience or a misplaced desire to help.
The next thing we wondered was when should you help a chick out of its shell?
When You Should Consider Helping It When everything works as it is supposed to, once a baby chick has pipped the first hole in the eggshell it will come out on its own in no longer than 24 hours. Unless there are visible signs of injury to the chick, like blood, do not try to help it hatch before the 24 hour mark.
If it’s been more than 24 hours since the chick first pipped and you have had problems maintaining a high enough humidity during incubation, the problem may be simply that the chick is stuck to the dried out membrane inside the shell. In that case, you may decide to help, but be forewarned!
