Is stop&shop adding robots to its stores?
Since January, the northeastern supermarket chain Stop & Shop has introduced more than 200 robots to stores in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New Jersey. This month the company will begin rolling Marty out to stores in New York.
Stop & Shop’s robot is one such example. In 2019, the supermarket company introduced Marty, “an autonomous robot that uses image capturing technology to report spills, debris, and other potential hazards to store employees to improve your shopping experience .”.
One more question we ran across in our research was “What will robots do in the grocery store?”.
Walmart and Midwestern supermarket chain Schnucks have deployed robots that help monitor inventory . A union that represents Giant and Stop & Shop workers says it’s keeping an eye on Marty. It remains to be seen what the groceries will ultimately use the technology for.
This begs the inquiry “Can robots be used to monitor inventory in stores?”
Rowland said the robots can eventually be repurposed to help monitor a store’s inventory . A robot observed Tuesday at a Stop & Shop store in Seekonk, Massachusetts, alerted store associates to a price tag that had fallen in one aisle, and a tiny sprig of herbs in another.
‘Marty does not have any surveillance capabilities.’ Marty the Robot is Stop & Shop’s most recognizable gimmick: A tall, oblong robot with googly eyes, moving steadily around the store. According to an alleged former Stop & Shop worker on Tik. Tok, Marty is secretly a surveillance droid.
