Sonic Mania takes place over 12 levels, called zones; the game features eight “remixed” zones, such as Green Hill Zone from the first Sonic game (1991), alongside four original ones. Remixed stages consist of both new elements and recycled gimmicks and ideas from other past Sonic games.

What does the blue ring do in sonic mania?
In this game, they are much smaller than they were in Sonic Colors. In gameplay, the Blue Rings appear as byproducts of the Cube Wispon. When smashing an enemy that is encased in a Blue Cube by the Cube Wispon, the playable will release Blue Rings that are automatically drawn towards the Avatar, which will increase both their Ring count and score.

Modern Sonic is actually Shadow in disguise. He painted himself Sonic’s shade of blue, and the paint was darkened by his natural skin tone. The original concepts had him as lighter, but they darkened him to fit the rest of the game palettes more easily, as I recall. It’s no longer a concern so they may have thrown back.
