Shellac, just as many other finishes, is not waterproof, however, it is quite water resistant. Shellac can easily withstand water for about 4 hours. Even if the surface is not wiped, the resulting faint white stain will still fade away as it dries. How do you make wood waterproof? There are three surefire ways to waterproof your wood for years to come.
Why is shellac not used as a wood finish anymore?
The problem with shellac, and part of the reason why it has fallen out of fashion as a modern wood finish, is that when used alone it is easily damaged by water and alcohol. To produce a lasting shellac finish, a transparent sealant must be put on top. Lay out a drop cloth or several layers of old newspapers, and put the wood object on top of that.
The shellac does not have to be dewaxed if you plan to use oil-based paint. It does have to be dewaxed if you plan to use waterborne paint. Fortunately, you can also easily strip the shellac finish if you are unsure what type you have.
Shellac is a type of interior-use wood finish that easily absorbs into the previous coat. That means it’s quick and easy to apply several coats, which if put on thin, will dry really fast. Plus, you can easily repair a shellac finish, which I’ll cover in a bit more detail below.
Make sure you apply it evenly and let it dry completely before you use the coaster. If your coasters aren’t wood, you can use shellac. Unfortunately, it doesn’t do well under heat, so it’s not suitable for coasters and hot coffee. However, it can protect different items aside from wood.
One of the next things we wondered was what are the benefits of using shellac?
Shellac has wonderful blocking properties, better than any other finish. It blocks silicone contamination, which causes fish eye, odors (for example, from smoke or animal urine), and residual wax extremely well. Shellac also blocks the resin from pine knots and very oily exotic woods, which can slow the drying of lacquer and varnish significantly.
Can you use shellac over acrylic paint?
Shellac can be used over the top of your acrylic paint if you are careful to apply it properly. You can use one coat to seal the wood. All you need to do is rub it on liberally and then wipe the surface to seal it.
This of course begs the query “Should I use shellac or spar urethane to paint this piece?”
I have found that I much prefer the appearance and texture of shellac (de-waxed) to a high gloss spar urethane. I don’t really need good scratch resistance for this particular piece, and the paint should protect the wood enough from moisture and sunlight. I’m also not too concerned about color changes over time as long as it is uniform.
One of the next things we wondered was; do you need to Prime shellac before painting?
Depending on the state of the shellac, you may even need to consider applying a thin coat of primer before you paint the final coat. Ensuring that everything is in excellent condition upfront is the key to a successful project.
