What are wegmans?
Wegmans is a privately owned company, founded in 1916 by brothers John and Walter Wegman as the Rochester Fruit and Vegetable Company . Wegmans is headquartered in the Rochester suburb of Gates.
Wegmans Food Markets , Inc. is a 106-store supermarket chain with stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, Massachusetts, and North Carolina. The family company, recognized as an industry leader and innovator, celebrated its 100 th anniversary in 2016.
A common query we ran across in our research was “What was the first Wegmans store?”.
The answer is that robert Wegman joins the company. Frozen (then known as “frosted”) foods first appear at Wegmans. Wegmans’ first suburban store and the first store located within a plaza opens at 1910 Monroe Avenue in the Twelve Corners Shopping Center, becoming the ninth store in the chain.
Most of Wegmans’ newer stores are of the superstore or megamarket type, with a large area, a variety of foods aimed at an upscale clientele, and, in many stores, Market Café in-store dining areas. From 2002-2009, Wegmans owned and operated Tastings , a full-service restaurant at its Pittsford, New York store.
Wegmans’ first website airs, featuring more than 300 pages of information and services for customers online . Wegmans launches its Seafood HACCP program for food safety chain wide. On April 1, 1997, Robert B. Wegman celebrates 60 years of service to the company. A Wegmans mini “store” opens in The Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester.
When we were researching we ran into the question “Is there a Wegmans in New England?”.
Wegmans, having long planned to expand into New England , opened their first store in that region in Northborough, Massachusetts on October 16, 2011. 2014 saw Wegmans opening two more Massachusetts stores, in Newton on April 27, and in Burlington on October 26.
This of course begs the question “Is Wegmans a chain or franchise?”
Wegmans Food Markets, Inc, is a privately held American supermarket chain ; it is headquartered in Gates, New York. As of May 2021, Wegmans has 106 stores in the mid-Atlantic and Northeastern regions.
Why do customers choose Wegmans?

Most online reviews of Wegmans are nothing but positive . For many, its main flaw is that it’s still just a regional store — headquartered in Rochester, New York, the chain has just 99 stores across the Northeastern US and the East Coast.
With the look and feel of an open-air European market, Wegmans is a grocery store chain in the Northeast that has gained a cult following. Seriously, there was a high school musical about Wegmans—more on that later—and in 2018, more than 5,300 people contacted the supermarket chain asking for stores in their neighborhoods.
Is William Wegman a Weimaraner?
For more than 40 years, artist William Wegman has been making portraits and videos of his beloved Weimaraner dogs, who have appeared in numerous publications and on television shows like Sesame Street and Saturday Night Live. And this month, he released a new career retrospective book, “ William Wegman: Being Human .”.
